NYS Harvesting and Planting Lags Slightly Behind Averages



According to the National Agricultural Statistics Service in New York, there were 3.5 days suitable for fieldwork for the week ending Sunday.

Topsoil moisture supplies were 0 percent very short, 6 percent short, 70 percent adequate, and 24 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies were 0 percent very short, 6 percent short, 84 percent adequate, and 10 percent surplus.

New York State fall tillage was 45 percent complete, behind the 5-year average of 51 percent complete.

Corn in the dough stage was 93 percent while 79 percent of the crop was in the dented stage. Twenty-eight percent of the New York corn crop was mature. Corn silage harvested was 43 percent complete.

Third cutting of alfalfa was 95 percent complete with the fourth cutting 51 percent complete, slightly below the 5-year average of 55 percent. Third cutting of other hay was 66 percent and fourth cutting was at 26 percent complete.

Soybeans fully podded was reported at 86 percent complete and soybeans dropping leaves was 68 percent. The soybean harvest was 14 percent complete.

Winter wheat planted was 28 percent complete, behind last year's 31 percent and the 5-year average of 43 percent.
