Spring planting progresses amid challenges

Spring planting progresses amid challenges

By Blake Jackson

New York farmers faced limited field work opportunities due to recent wet conditions. The National Agricultural Statistics Service reported only 4.5 out of 7 days were suitable for fieldwork during the week ending May 5th, 2024.

Despite the limitations, some progress was made on spring planting activities. Oat planting reached 34%, exceeding the average by 3%. Barley planting also progressed well, reaching 23% completion, ahead of both last year's and the average pace.

Soil moisture remains in good condition. Topsoil is mostly adequate (77%) with some surplus (16%). Subsoil moisture is even better, with 83% listed as adequate and 11% surplus.

Apple trees are developing steadily. Green tip stage reached 66% completion, surpassing the 5-year average. Pink stage development is at 34%, slightly ahead of last year. However, full bloom hasn't begun yet.

Winter wheat is in good condition overall, with 6% of heads emerged. Hay and pastures are also faring well, with a majority rated good to excellent.
