Three farm families with more than a century of history, hard work, and connection to their land were recently honored at the Delaware Agricultural Museum with induction into the Delaware Century Farm Program.
Established in 1987, the program recognizes farms that have remained in the same family for at least 100 years while continuing agricultural production. To qualify, farms must include at least 10 acres of the original parcel or generate more than $10,000 annually in farm sales.
“This is a celebration of heritage,” said Delaware Agriculture Secretary Don Clifton, whose own family farm in Sussex County dates to 1929. “Thank you for your perseverance. I know it can be tough sometimes. Thank you for what you do and congratulations.”
With the addition of these three families representing Sussex, New Castle, and Kent counties the program has now recognized 163 Century Farms over the past 39 years.
Honorees receive a commemorative farm sign, an engraved plate, and official legislative recognition.
One of the newly recognized farms is Iona Stables & Inn in Milford, originally purchased in 1876 by David and Margaret Argo.
Over time, the Argos expanded their landholdings and operated a blacksmith shop that also served as a local mail drop, leading to the area being known as Argo’s Corner. Today, the property includes horse stables and leased land used for crops such as vegetables, grains, and soybeans.
The Staats Family Farm in Smyrna/Clayton was purchased in 1922 by Herman and Elizabeth Staats and has remained in the family for generations.
The farm has consistently produced corn, wheat, and soybeans, with stewardship now continuing through family trustees.
Wright Family Farms in Harrington, established in 1919, has been passed down through generations and remains under family ownership.
The farm has supported both crop production and poultry operations, reflecting a long-standing commitment to agriculture and family legacy.
