$1M Grant for New York Farmer's Markets

$1M Grant for New York Farmer's Markets

By Blake Jackson

New York State farmers' markets can access $1 million in grant funding through the third round of the Farmers' Market Resiliency Grant Program, announced by Agriculture Commissioner Richard A. Ball.

This initiative, supported by the New York State Budget, aims to bolster local food system resilience. The program follows two successful rounds, with awards for Round 2 announced in 2024.

“Our farmers’ markets are a staple in our communities, offering the opportunity for New Yorkers to purchase fresh local food and connect with their farmers, while providing a market for New York agricultural producers,” Commissioner Ball said.

“Through this program, we are seeing terrific projects that are helping our markets increase their promotional efforts to reach even more consumers and funding online platforms that are not only making it easier for farmers to do business but encouraging sales at participating locations. That means our families can take advantage of all that our farmers’ markets offer, including supplemental benefits for our underserved communities.”

Grants, ranging from $25,000 to $50,000, will support projects that enhance market infrastructure (booths, signage, cold storage), modernize systems (website development, online sales), and boost marketing and promotion.

Funded projects should contribute to a resilient food system, especially during supply chain disruptions, and promote long-term market viability, sustainability, and accessibility.

Applications are due by 3:00 pm on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, and will be reviewed on a rolling basis until funds are exhausted.

A program information webinar will be held on February 26 at 12:00 pm. Application details and eligibility criteria are available on the Department’s website.

This funding aligns with Governor Hochul’s commitment to a robust food system in New York State. It complements other initiatives like FreshConnect Fresh2You and Nourish New York, which focus on food access.

The Governor’s 2025 State of the State and Executive Budget proposals further emphasize this commitment, including funding for a Food and Fiber Small-Scale Processing Grant Program, maintaining Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program benefits, and expanding access to locally sourced seafood.

Governor Hochul’s proposals build on recent efforts to strengthen the supply chain and food processing capacity.

These investments demonstrate New York State’s dedication to supporting its agricultural producers, ensuring food access for all residents, and building a resilient food system capable of withstanding future challenges.

The Farmers' Market Resiliency Grant Program is a key component of this comprehensive strategy.
