Czymmek Takes on Dairy Climate Role in NY

By Blake Jackson

PRO-DAIRY has appointed Karl Czymmek to the newly established role of Dairy Climate Leadership specialist, tasked with overseeing climate leadership and greenhouse gas reduction initiatives statewide for New York's dairy industry. With a wealth of experience in the state's dairy sector, Czymmek's return is praised by PRO-DAIRY Director Dr. Thomas Overton. Having served over two decades as a PRO-DAIRY nutrient management specialist, Czymmek's expertise spans production agriculture, agronomy, and law. His recent roles at Dairy Management Inc. and Truterra focused on environmental stewardship and greenhouse gas reduction within the dairy industry, aligning with the goals set by the Innovation Center for US Dairy.

In his new role, Czymmek will concentrate on fostering collaboration, communication, and training among dairy producers, industry advisors, scientists, and regulatory bodies. The aim is to enhance sustainability by economically advancing practices while preserving the environment. Key focal points include soil management and carbon sequestration, strategies to reduce enteric methane emissions, and effective manure management. The overarching objective is to devise economically viable solutions that mitigate greenhouse gas emissions while supporting the interests of dairy producers.

PRO-DAIRY, a recognized leader in extension and research for over 30 years, underscores its commitment to advancing the dairy industry's environmental practices through the appointment of Czymmek, leveraging his extensive background and national experience in carbon and climate-related issues.
