Deaf Refugees Cultivate Hope and Independence on CNY Farm, Inspiring Nationwide Movement

Deaf New Americans, a non-profit organization, is leading a groundbreaking initiative on a farm in Kirkville, Central New York, to empower deaf refugees by providing them with the opportunity to grow their own produce. Known as Asha Laalya, meaning "farm of hope," this innovative project aims to serve as a model for similar initiatives across the country. Monu Chhetri, the founder and CEO of the non-profit, emphasizes the importance of a deaf-led farm, allowing individuals to take control of their destinies.

Beyond self-sustainability, the farm also aims to generate income by selling produce at farmers markets, enabling the deaf refugees to support their families. The project represents a broader community effort to create a nurturing environment where traditions and self-sufficiency can thrive. Despite the challenges of adapting to the climate in Central New York, the participants, many of whom honed their agricultural skills in refugee camps overseas, are determined to succeed.

Chhetri, who personally experienced life in a refugee camp in Nepal before immigrating to the U.S., dispels concerns about the work ethic of migrants, highlighting the unwavering dedication and perseverance exhibited by the individuals she works with. To address skepticism, she invites observers to witness the dedication and industriousness of the deaf refugees, who are committed to providing for their families and actively contributing to their community.

The success of Asha Laalya has inspired other advocacy groups, prompting them to consider similar initiatives. Chhetri hopes that their experience will encourage further collaboration and learning within the community. As they continue to learn and grow, the organization plans to offer workshops and cooking classes, fostering an environment of continuous improvement.

On July 29, the farm will open its doors for "Farm Day," welcoming the public to experience the farm, savor the group's culinary offerings, and purchase their locally grown produce. Asha Laalya stands as a testament to the resilience and determination of deaf refugees, proving that with the right support, they can create a brighter future for themselves and inspire others to do the same.
