New York State Agriculture Commissioner Richard A. Ball revealed the three finalists for the 2023 Agricultural Environmental Management (AEM)-Leopold Conservation Award, recognizing outstanding efforts in environmental preservation and farm viability. This prestigious accolade, in partnership with the Sand County Foundation's Leopold Conservation Award program, honors farms and their nominating Soil and Water Conservation Districts for their dedication to protecting soil and water quality while ensuring a sustainable future.
The finalists for this year's AEM-Leopold Conservation Award exemplify Aldo Leopold's land ethic and inspire others through their commitment to land, water, and wildlife habitat management. The finalists include Dygert Farms in Montgomery County, Humbert Farms in Wayne County, and Tongore Farm in Ulster County.
Dygert Farms, a tricentennial dairy and dairy processing operation, has embraced conservation practices in collaboration with the Montgomery County Soil and Water Conservation District, focusing on nutrient cycling, soil health, and water quality protection. Humbert Farms, a fourth-generation farm, prioritizes soil preservation and health, resilience to weather extremes, and community partnerships, working closely with the Wayne County Soil and Water Conservation District. Tongore Farm, owned by Brett Fox, demonstrates exceptional commitment to soil and plant health, rotational grazing, and grassroots conservation education with the Ulster County Soil and Water Conservation District.
Presented in partnership with the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets, the AEM-LCA award highlights exemplary agricultural conservation practices. The winner, to be announced later this summer, will receive a $10,000 award and be featured in a video showcasing their exceptional conservation efforts.
By honoring these exceptional farms and conservation districts, the award underscores the importance of sustainable agricultural practices and their positive impact on the environment, fostering a legacy of responsible land stewardship for future generations.
