Glenora wine cellars - A Finger Lakes pioneer

Glenora wine cellars - A Finger Lakes pioneer

By Blake Jackson

Glenora Wine Cellars, nestled on the peaceful shores of Seneca Lake, has played a pivotal role in shaping the Finger Lakes wine industry since its founding in 1977.

As the first winery on Seneca Lake, Glenora has not only seen the region’s transformation into a world-renowned wine destination but has also been a driving force behind it.

The winery is known for its pioneering efforts, from introducing new grape varieties to hosting cherished community events, making it a cornerstone of the local wine culture.

Edward Miller, Glenora’s head winemaker, brings a wealth of global experience to the winery. Originally from New Jersey, Edward's journey through winemaking took him from Lucas Vineyards in the Finger Lakes to renowned wine regions across California, New Zealand, Australia, and Italy.

Edward Miller experiences abroad deepened his respect for the distinctive characteristics of each region, yet his heart remained in the Finger Lakes.

In 2021, Edward returned to the region, becoming Glenora’s head winemaker, where he continues to craft exceptional Rieslings, sparkling wines, and innovative creations like Seyval Blanc Pet-Nat.

Glenora’s legacy extends beyond winemaking to active community engagement. Founder Gene Pierce was instrumental in passing the New York Farm Winery Act in the 1970s, a pivotal move that allowed small wineries to sell directly to consumers.

This legislation played a key role in establishing the Finger Lakes as a thriving wine region. Today, Glenora hosts popular events like the annual Jazz Greats concerts, special tastings, and the "Dosage Your Own Sparkling Wine" event, offering unique experiences for both visitors and locals.

Glenora’s wine portfolio, with standout offerings such as sparkling Brut, Blanc de Blanc, and Dry Riesling, reflects its deep roots and innovative approach.

With a strong commitment to its craft and community, Glenora Wine Cellars continues to thrive, blending tradition with forward-thinking winemaking.

As it celebrates over 40 years, Glenora looks ahead to a bright future, remaining a leader in the Finger Lakes wine region.
