New York's Department of Agriculture and Markets Commissioner will kick off the maple syrup season by visiting Dutch Hill Maple Farm on March 1st. The event will celebrate the first tapping of the season and promote upcoming Maple Weekends, held on March 16-17 and 23-24. These weekends offer visitors a chance to experience firsthand how maple syrup is made through tours, tastings, and demonstrations at participating sugarhouses.
The event will also mark the official opening of Dutch Hill Maple's new sugarhouse, completed in 2023. The farm is part of the New York State Grown & Certified program, highlighting its commitment to food safety and sustainable practices.
New York is a major player in the maple syrup industry, ranking second nationally in production with 750,000 gallons produced in 2023. Home to the most tappable maple trees in the U.S. and over 2,000 maple sugar makers, the state boasts a rich tradition in this sweet industry.
This event is an opportunity to celebrate New York's agricultural heritage and encourage residents to participate in Maple Weekends, a unique opportunity to learn about and enjoy this local product.
