The Southwest New York Dairy, Livestock & Field Crops Program (SWNYDLFC) of Cornell Cooperative Extension has welcomed Katie Callero as its new dairy management specialist. Callero will support the region’s dairy farmers with expertise in herd health, milk quality, calf care, nutrition, grazing, and other critical areas of dairy farming. She can be reached at (607) 422-6788 or via email at krc85@cornell.edu.
Callero’s passion for animal science began in childhood and led her to pursue higher education at Cornell University. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in animal science and a minor in infectious disease biology, earning the distinction of cum laude. Following her undergraduate studies, she managed a research lab focusing on dairy cows, specifically transition cows, at Cornell’s veterinary school. This sparked her interest in research and motivated her to pursue a Master’s degree. Her thesis explored the behavior and welfare of cows and calves, with a focus on separation dynamics.
Excited to engage with local dairy farmers, Callero plans to visit farms and agribusinesses across the region to understand their needs and share insights. She will also utilize Cornell’s research to provide educational articles, workshops, and programming for the local community.
“We are thrilled to have a complete team of specialists serving our region,” said Katelyn Walley, SWNYDLFC team leader and farm business management specialist. “Katie has already proven to be an invaluable addition, offering our farmers not only a wealth of knowledge and expertise but also a compassionate and supportive approach. Her dedication and experience are truly assets to our team and community.”
The SWNYDLFC program serves Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie, and Steuben counties. A collaborative effort between Cornell University and local Cornell Cooperative Extension Associations, the program provides research-based education and resources to farmers and agribusinesses.
Katie Callero joins a team that includes Katelyn Walley (Farm Business Management), Amy Barkley (Livestock Management), and Katelyn Miller (Field Crops Specialist). Together, they work to address agricultural challenges and opportunities in the region.
SWNYDLFC is committed to inclusivity and equal opportunities, offering resources to all individuals and recognizing the contributions of protected veterans and individuals with disabilities.
