UdderWays, a dairy technology startup founded by the Neal family from Orleans County, New York, has secured a significant win at the 2024 Grow-NY agriculture business competition. The company clinched second place, earning a $500,000 prize to further their innovative work in dairy farming.
The Neal family's patented udder preparation tool aims to revolutionize dairy farming by improving cow health and increasing milk production.
The device sanitizes and stimulates cow udders before milking, reducing the risk of infection and enhancing milking efficiency.
“This competition was an incredible opportunity to showcase the work we’re doing in dairy innovation,” said Zach Neal, CEO of UdderWays and a fourth-generation dairy farmer who co-presented on stage with his father, Jody. “We’re grateful to have been chosen as a Grow-NY winner and excited to bring our vision to life for farmers everywhere.”
The Grow-NY competition, held annually in upstate New York, recognizes innovative ideas in the food, beverage, and agriculture sectors. This year's competition attracted 312 applicants from 26 states and 50 countries.
The Neal family's journey to success is a testament to their dedication to innovation and their deep roots in the dairy industry.
With a strong foundation in agriculture and a passion for problem-solving, they have developed a product that addresses a real need in the dairy sector.
The family's involvement in 4-H has played a crucial role in their success. The skills and experience gained through 4-H, including leadership, public speaking, and technical skills, have been invaluable in their entrepreneurial journey.
“4-H gave us the skills we needed, from leadership to public speaking to hands-on tech skills,” said Zach Neal. “All of it played a big role in our success.”
With the support of Grow-NY and their continued dedication, UdderWays is poised to make a significant impact on the dairy industry and beyond.
