New York kicks off the holidays with its 9th annual tree-cutting tradition, highlighting the state's vibrant Christmas tree industry. This year's ceremony took place at Country Pine Farm, an NYS Grown & Certified Christmas tree farm in Holland, New York.
The 8-foot Fraser Fir chosen will be displayed at the Western New York Welcome Center in December, greeting visitors during the busy holiday season.
"New York’s agricultural industry plays such an important role in our holiday traditions in ways that many New Yorkers may be surprised to discover," said Commissioner Richard A. Ball.
"Today, I’m proud to shine a spotlight on agriculture’s contributions to this festive season – from growing beautiful, local Christmas trees to display, to producing the delicious foods for our family feasts, to creating specialty items that we give as gifts, New York’s farmers provide some of the most celebratory items of the season, setting the stage for so many happy holiday memories. I encourage everyone to shop local this holiday season for their trees, décor, food, gifts, and more.”
The ceremony included representatives from Erie County, the Town of Holland, Cornell Cooperative Extension, and the Western New York Christmas Tree Farmers Association.
Country Pine Farm owners Ann and Ray Zywiczynski and their family were also present, celebrating their farm's membership in the NYS Grown & Certified program, which ensures trees are grown with sustainability in mind.
Country Pine Farm, once a dairy farm, has transformed into a Christmas tree haven over the past 36 years. The Zywiczynskis cultivate various species of trees including Norway Spruce, Fraser Fir, Concolor Fir, and Canaan Fir. Their commitment to sustainability includes planting two seedlings for every harvested tree.
Open Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays starting the day after Thanksgiving, Country Pine Farm offers visitors the chance to choose and cut their own tree or select a pre-cut one. They also sell fresh wreaths, garlands, and artisanal gifts, making it a one-stop shop for holiday cheer.
The chosen tree will be decorated and displayed at the Western New York Welcome Center, featuring a special NYS Grown & Certified topper to be unveiled on December 6th.
All Welcome Centers and Taste NY Markets will showcase New York-grown Christmas trees and wreaths this season, promoting the state's industry and offering unique regional gifts.
