New York celebrates local Christmas trees

By Blake Jackson

New York State Agriculture Commissioner Richard A. Ball recently led the 9th annual Christmas tree-cutting ceremony at Country Pine Farm, an NYS Grown & Certified tree farm in Holland, New York.

The event, which featured the cutting of an 8-foot Fraser Fir, celebrates New York’s Christmas tree industry, which contributes $14 million annually to the state’s economy. The tree will be displayed at the Western New York Welcome Center during the holiday season, welcoming travelers and showcasing local agriculture.

“New York’s agricultural industry plays such an important role in our holiday traditions in ways that many New Yorkers may be surprised to discover. Today, I’m proud to shine a spotlight on agriculture’s contributions to this festive season – from growing beautiful, local Christmas trees to display, to producing the delicious foods for our family feasts, to creating specialty items that we give as gifts, New York’s farmers provide some of the most celebratory items of the season, setting the stage for so many happy holiday memories. I encourage everyone to shop local this holiday season for their trees, décor, food, gifts, and more,” said Commissioner Ball.

Country Pine Farm, originally a dairy farm, has been run by the Zywiczynski family for over 36 years. The farm now grows sustainable Christmas trees, including Fraser Fir, Norway Spruce, and Concolor Fir. For every tree harvested, two seedlings are planted, ensuring environmental sustainability. The farm also offers fresh wreaths, garlands, and gifts crafted by local artisans. Visitors can select and cut their own tree or choose from pre-cut options during the holiday season.

The chosen Fraser Fir will feature a NYS Grown & Certified topper and be unveiled at the Western New York Welcome Center. This Welcome Center, inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright, highlights regional attractions and local products, offering Taste NY gift baskets, snacks, and beverages. The "Hands-On Holiday" event on December 14 invites families to enjoy wreath-making, crafts, and shopping for local products.

New York ranks fourth nationally in Christmas tree farms, with 875 farms spanning nearly 19,000 acres. Local farms play a vital role in holiday traditions, supporting the economy and creating lasting family memories.

For those unable to visit in person, the online marketplace ShopTasteNY.com offers New York-grown products and holiday gift sets, ensuring that everyone can experience the quality and charm of New York’s agriculture this season.
