New York crops healthy despite cool weather

New York experienced favorable weather conditions for fieldwork during the week ending September 15, 2024. Despite below-normal temperatures and rainfall, 6.5 days were suitable for field activities.

Soil moisture levels remained adequate, with topsoil and subsoil supplies rated 71% and 84% adequate, respectively.

Crop Progress Highlights:

  • Corn: 81% of corn is in the dough stage, 48% is dented, and 14% has been harvested for silage.
  • Soybeans: 92% of soybeans are setting pods, 30% are dropping leaves, and 4% have been harvested.
  • Grapes: 9% of grapes have been harvested.
  • Hay: 88% of third-cut alfalfa hay and 40% of fourth-cut alfalfa hay have been harvested. 70% of third-cut other hay and 22% of fourth-cut other hay have been harvested.
  • Other Crops: 96% of oats and 59% of onions have been harvested. 52% of potatoes have been harvested. 69% of sweet corn and 49% of snap beans have been harvested.

Overall, New York's crops are in good condition, and fieldwork activities have progressed steadily despite below-normal temperatures and rainfall.
