The New York Wine & Grape Foundation highlights the stories of the state’s exceptional wineries, it recently featured Whitecliff Vineyard, a leader in New York’s wine industry known for its passion, innovation, and commitment to sustainability.

Located in the Hudson River Region, Whitecliff Vineyard was founded by Michael Migliore and Yancey Stanforth-Migliore. This winery has become a cornerstone of the local wine scene, celebrated for its outstanding wines and dedication to environmental and animal welfare.

Whitecliff Vineyard began in 1979 when Michael, leveraging his background in chemistry and engineering, planted experimental vines on the property.

His efforts led to significant advancements in regional viticulture, earning him the NYWGF’s Grower of the Year Award in 2015. The vineyard, originally 26 acres in Gardiner, has expanded to include an additional 10 acres along the Hudson River.

The vineyard’s commitment to sustainability is evident in its certification under the NYWGF Sustainable Winegrowing Program. Whitecliff’s eco-friendly practices include recycling and minimal intervention, reflecting the growing consumer demand for sustainable wines.

Whitecliff also plays a significant role in the local community. It supports local businesses by featuring their products in its tasting rooms and hosts fundraisers for animal shelters like the Woodstock Animal Sanctuary.

The vineyard is known for its all-vegan policy and dog-friendly environment, exemplified by events such as the annual Pawstume Party, a Halloween costume contest for dogs.

Whitecliff Vineyard offers a diverse range of wines, including the North River Champagne Method and the signature Cabernet Franc.

Their Awosting White, a blend of Seyval Blanc and Vignoles, has been a favorite for over 25 years. Other notable wines include Gamay Noir and Sky Island Red, showcasing the region’s unique wine potential.

With a legacy of innovation and excellence, Whitecliff Vineyard remains a prominent figure in New York’s wine industry.
