New York crops thrive amidst favorable conditions

New York crops thrive amidst favorable conditions

By Blake Jackson

New York farmers enjoyed a productive week, with five days suitable for fieldwork reported for the week ending August 11, 2024. Soil moisture levels were generally adequate, with 67% of topsoil and 85% of subsoil classified as such.

While there were small percentages of very short and short moisture supplies, the overall conditions supported agricultural activities.

Crop development has progressed steadily. Barley and oat harvests are nearing completion at 68% and 58% respectively. Corn is advancing through its growth stages, with 84% of the crop silking and 13% in the dough stage.

Soybean development is also on track, with 72% of plants blooming and 39% setting pods. Hay production continues, with alfalfa second cutting at 97% complete and third cutting at 52%. Other hay crops have also made significant progress.

Fruit and vegetable harvests are underway. Apple and potato harvests have begun, while cabbage, onion, and sweet corn harvests are progressing. Snap bean planting is complete, with early harvests starting.

Overall, New York agriculture is in a positive position, with favorable weather conditions contributing to crop growth and development.
