The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently announced it has suspended its Grade A raw milk and finished product Proficiency Testing (PT) program. However, this decision does not affect the safety of New York's milk and dairy products. New Yorkers can be assured that the State's Department of Agriculture and Markets (Department) will continue testing milk and dairy products at various facilities, ensuring the ongoing safety of the food supply.
The Department plays a critical role in maintaining the safety of New York's food and dairy products. Through its Divisions of Milk Control and Dairy Services (MCDS) and Food Safety and Inspection (FSI), along with the New York State Food Laboratory, routine inspections and quality control testing are conducted at farms, plants, and stores across the state.
MCDS is responsible for inspecting fluid plants, manufacturing facilities, and wholesale frozen dessert plants. These inspections happen every 90 days in line with the Pasteurized Milk Ordinance, and regular sampling ensures compliance. In 2024, MCDS carried out 6,949 inspections and submitted 15,587 samples for testing.
FSI’s work extends beyond dairy, inspecting a range of establishments such as food processing plants, retail stores, food warehouses, and slaughterhouses. In 2024, FSI conducted 23,783 inspections and submitted 2,785 samples for analysis. The New York State Food Laboratory tests these samples for biological and chemical contaminants to guarantee food safety.
Despite the FDA’s suspension, the Department’s ongoing vigilance assures the public that New York’s food supply remains safe, with daily inspections and rigorous testing continuing across the state. New Yorkers can feel confident that their dairy products are tested regularly for safety and quality.
