New York offers $350K for youth transportation to fairs

By Blake Jackson

New York State Agriculture Commissioner Richard A. Ball recently announced two funding opportunities aimed at supporting local and county fairs across the state.

The first initiative, the Transportation for Youth to New York State County and Local Fairs Competitive Grants Program, will offer $350,000 in total funding to help cover transportation costs for youth groups to attend county and local fairs in the 2025 fair season.

This program aims to ensure that more young people, particularly those who might otherwise miss out, have the chance to experience New York’s fairs and gain exposure to the state's agricultural industries.

Following the success of a pilot program at the Boonville-Oneida County Fair in July 2024, which allowed 800 students from Utica to attend the event, this new grant will focus on increasing youth participation in agricultural education.

“Our county and local fairs are so important to New York’s agricultural industry, serving as community centerpieces that educate the public about the importance of this critical industry,” said Commissioner Ball.

"Thanks to Governor Hochul’s commitment to boosting our county fairs and our ag education efforts, we’re proud to offer two great funding opportunities that will each help bring new visitors to our fairs this summer. This is a fantastic way to make sure that our New Yorkers, young and old, can visit their local fairs to experience all that these exciting, educational events have to offer. I encourage all eligible entities to look at these opportunities and consider applying.”

The program aims to foster agricultural awareness and provide educational experiences about New York’s agricultural products, many of which are among the best in the world.

Grants of up to $25,000 are available to support transportation, fair entry fees, meals for participants, and agricultural programming at the fairs. The application deadline is February 18, 2025, at 4:00 pm.

Additionally, the Agricultural Fairgrounds Advertising, Promotion, and Education Program (AFAPEP) is opening its second round of funding, offering $500,000 for 50 fairs across New York.

Each selected fair will receive $10,000 to promote agricultural and domestic arts through marketing and educational activities.

The AFAPEP aims to increase visitor participation and appreciation of agriculture by showcasing local products and educating the public on the significance of agriculture in New York.
