New York state proposes coastal resilience programs

By Blake Jackson

The New York State Department of State has unveiled proposed eligibility guidelines for two programs aimed at bolstering coastal resilience. These programs will allocate funds from the $4.2 billion Clean Water, Clean Air and Green Jobs Environmental Bond Act of 2022.

The programs, namely the Inland Flooding and Local Waterfront Revitalization Implementation Projects Program and the Coastal Rehabilitation and Resilience Project Program, seek to safeguard coastal communities from flooding and climate change impacts.

“This investment will help to protect coastal communities, restore critical habitats and address regional priorities,” said Secretary of State Walter T. Mosley.

The Department of State is inviting public feedback on the draft guidelines until August 9th. This input will be used to refine the programs and ensure they effectively address coastal challenges.

The Bond Act mandates a significant allocation towards disadvantaged communities, with a target of 40% of funds directed to areas identified by the Climate Justice Working Group.

The full eligibility guidelines for both programs are available in the Environmental Notice Bulletin. Interested parties can submit written comments to Alicia Candlen at the New York State Department of State or via email (alicia.candlen@dos.ny.gov) with "Bond Act" in the subject line.

Questions can be directed to (518) 473-3656.

By engaging with the public, the Department of State aims to create programs that effectively protect New York's coastal communities from the escalating threats of flooding and climate change.
