The Northern New York Agricultural Development Program (NNYADP) has been awarded $300,000 in funding from the 2023-2024 New York State Budget, thanks to the support of the New York State Assembly.
This farmer-driven research program will utilize the funding to conduct studies on the distinct micro-climates, soils, challenges, and opportunities present in the agricultural sectors across the six northernmost counties of New York: Clinton, Essex, Franklin, Jefferson, Lewis, and St. Lawrence.
Established by the New York State Legislature in 1961, the NNYADP has played a pivotal role in fostering the region's agricultural growth, transforming it into a prominent economic engine for both northern New York and the entire state.
Joseph Giroux, Co-Chair of the NNYADP, expressed gratitude to the New York State Assembly, particularly the members of the Assembly Agriculture Committee, with special acknowledgement to Assemblyman Billy Jones for his unwavering support. Giroux, alongside co-chairs Jon Rulfs and Jon Greenwood, emphasized the value of prioritized research to local farms and the sustainable development of their communities.
Assemblyman Billy Jones highlighted the significance of the NNYADP in driving agricultural innovation not only in the North Country but throughout the state and country. Recognizing the program's contributions in areas like beech tree syrup, manure and food waste co-digestion, and calf probiotics, Jones championed the funding during budget negotiations to ensure the continuation of the NNYADP's vital work in supporting farmers in the North Country.
Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo, Chair of the Assembly Agriculture Committee, praised the NNYADP as a pioneering force in the advancement of New York's agricultural industry. Acknowledging the statewide and national significance of the program's research, Lupardo emphasized the importance of supporting Northern New York's crucial role in the thriving food economy of the state.
With over 80 farmers actively serving on the NNYADP Farmer Committee, representing a diverse range of farming enterprises, research projects cover various areas such as environmental stewardship, farm tile drainage, dairy, field crops, local foods, horticulture, honey, maple, and forestry production. The funding, administered by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets, reinforces the commitment to investing in and promoting agricultural opportunities in the North Country, contributing to the region's economic growth and agricultural sustainability.
