The USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) in California is now accepting applications for multiple Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) initiatives. These efforts aim to conserve wildlife, enhance water quality, and reduce livestock-predator conflicts. Applications must be submitted by May 30, 2025.
The Working Lands for Wildlife – Sage Grouse Initiative (SGI) supports habitat improvements for sage grouse while maintaining grazing operations. It covers eligible producers in designated counties including Modoc, Mono, Lassen, and more.
The Tricolored Blackbird Initiative, in partnership with Audubon California, encourages farmers to delay harvests in fields with active bird nests. Eligible lands must support blackbird nesting in silage crops.
The Joint Chiefs Landscape Restoration Project (JCLRP) is a collaboration between NRCS, the U.S. Forest Service, and local partners. It targets wildfire risk reduction and wildlife habitat protection in areas like Trinity County and the Eagle Lake Susan River Watersheds.
The National Water Quality Initiative (NWQI) focuses on small watersheds to improve soil health and reduce nutrient runoff. Priority areas include Clear Lake, Pescadero Creek, and Lower Salinas.
The WaterSmart Initiative works with local water agencies to improve conservation and drought resilience. Project areas include Westlands WD, Fresno ID, and others.
The Livestock-Predator Interaction Management Initiative supports ranchers in predator-prone areas with non-lethal deterrents and better livestock management. Eligible counties include Humboldt, Shasta, and Tehama.
“NRCS California remains committed to expanding our technical and financial assistance programs and engaging with more farmers and ranchers to protect valuable resources,” said State Conservationist Carlos Suarez.
For full eligibility and application details, producers should contact their local NRCS Service Center or visit www.ca.nrcs.usda.gov.
