New York's egg industry saw a small decline in production for May 2024. According to the latest USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service report, the state produced 143.4 million eggs in May, a 3% decrease compared to May 2023.
This dip in production aligns with a slight decrease in the number of laying hens (layers) in the state. The average number of layers in New York during May 2024 was 5.52 million, down 2% from the previous year.
Despite the small decline, New York egg production remains efficient. Egg production per 100 layers in May 2024 averaged 2,596 eggs, a decrease of only 1% compared to May 2023. This indicates that New York hens are laying at a consistent rate.
However, the national picture shows a similar trend, with overall US egg production down slightly (2%) in May 2024 compared to the previous year.
While New York's egg production dipped slightly in May, the industry appears stable. The small decrease aligns with a national trend and the average number of eggs laid per hen remains consistent. Continued monitoring of egg production data will provide further insights into the future performance of New York's egg industry.
