The New York Wine & Grape Foundation (NYWGF) has been a driving force in advancing the wine and grape industry through research.
Since its inception, NYWGF has supported numerous research projects in viticulture, enology, and business, funded by both private and state sources.
NYWGF plays a pivotal role in identifying industry research priorities and allocating funds to support relevant projects.
The foundation works closely with researchers at Cornell AgriTech and the Cornell Lake Erie Research and Extension Lab to ensure that research aligns with the needs of the industry.
The 2023-2024 fiscal year saw significant research advancements. Notable projects include:
- Fungicide Effectiveness: Evaluating the effectiveness of fungicides in controlling powdery mildew on Concord grapes.
- Tree of Heaven: Assessing the distribution of Tree of Heaven and its potential risks for the Spotted Lanternfly in NY vineyards.
- Hybrid Winegrape Varieties: Evaluating the performance of hybrid winegrape varieties on Long Island.
- Consumer Education: Developing an education and communication strategy to promote NY native/hybrid grape wines to consumers.
Sustainability is a key focus for NYWGF. The foundation supports research that aims to improve the environmental impact, economic viability, and social responsibility of the wine and grape industry.
The release of the 2023-2024 research reports highlights the significant contributions made by NYWGF and its partners.
As the industry continues to evolve, NYWGF remains committed to supporting research that drives innovation and ensures the long-term success of New York's wine and grape industry.
