Undeclared wheat allergens in bakery items

Undeclared wheat allergens in bakery items

By Blake Jackson

The New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets is issuing an allergy alert for certain bakery products due to undeclared wheat allergens. These products were manufactured by Local Roots Bakery, an unapproved and unlicensed source from Columbus, Ohio.

The potentially hazardous products include:

  • Cinnamon buns
  • Mini cinnamon buns
  • Alfajores duos
  • Brownies
  • Muffins

These items were sold in various sized plastic packages with no labeling codes. The potentially affected regions are the Hudson Valley and Long Island in New York.

The issue came to light after a consumer complaint triggered an investigation and product sampling by state food inspectors. Subsequent laboratory analysis confirmed the presence of undeclared wheat allergens.

Consumers with a severe wheat allergy are at risk of serious or life-threatening reactions if they consume these products.

Anyone who may have purchased these bakery items is urged to discard them immediately and avoid consumption. The New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets can be contacted for further information or to report concerns at agr.sm.hpregistrations@agriculture.ny.gov.
