The New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets has announced that more than $2.25 million in funding is now available to support youth and county fairs across New York State.
Of the total, $1.65 million will be distributed through the Agricultural Fairgrounds Infrastructure Improvement Program (AFIIP), which is funded through the State Budget.
The program is designed to help local fairs carry out agriculture-focused improvement and renovation projects that enhance fairgrounds and visitor experiences.
An additional $625,000 is being made available through the Agricultural Fairgrounds Advertising, Promotion, and Education Program (AFAPEP). This funding will support marketing, outreach, and educational efforts aimed at increasing attendance and strengthening public engagement with county and local fairs.
Governor Kathy Hochul’s 2026 State of the State Address also includes a proposal for expanded support for county fairs as part of her “Unplug and Play” initiative for children. Since 2016, New York State has committed a total of $25 million toward revitalizing county fairs.
“Our county and local fairs provide an incredible opportunity for fairgoers, especially our young people, to directly connect with our farmers and producers to learn about agriculture. This infusion of funding for our local fairs, both announced today and as proposed by our Governor, is a testament to just how important our fairs are to our communities," State Agriculture Commissioner Richard A. Ball said.
"They’re a gathering space that provides fun and affordable entertainment, that educates New Yorkers about where their food comes from and how its grown, and celebrates our rich agricultural traditions.”
AFIIP funds may be used for construction, repairs, equipment purchases, and upgrades to agricultural buildings, water systems, restrooms, and stormwater infrastructure. Eligible projects range from $10,000 to $50,000, with applications due by December 31, 2026.
AFAPEP funding supports advertising, digital marketing, and educational initiatives that promote fairs and agricultural awareness. Eligible organizations may receive up to $12,500, with completed work plans due by July 1, 2026.
