New Initiative to Strengthen County Farm Service Agencies

New Initiative to Strengthen County Farm Service Agencies

By Jamie Martin

The National Farmers Union (NFU) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) have forged a new Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in a move poised to significantly bolster support for America’s farmers and ranchers.

This agreement is set to enhance the functionality and customer service of the USDA's Farm Service Agency (FSA) county offices, which serve as a crucial resource for the agricultural community.

The collaboration involves the NFU conducting listening sessions across various farming communities to gather valuable feedback about their interactions with FSA staff and the effectiveness of the programs offered.

This grassroots approach ensures that the voices of family farmers and ranchers are heard and considered in the process of refining FSA services.

The primary focus of the MOU is to address the challenges posed by insufficient staffing and the increasing demand for FSA’s services, which include disaster recovery support, conservation programs, and agricultural financing.

These services are vital for the sustainability and success of farms across the country.

Zach Ducheneaux, FSA Administrator, emphasized the importance of this initiative as a step towards enhancing the agency’s ability to serve the agricultural community more effectively.

He noted that improving the work conditions and resources available to FSA staff is directly beneficial to the farmers and ranchers they support.

Rob Larew, President of the NFU, reaffirmed the union’s commitment to working with the USDA to streamline and strengthen the support systems that sustain America’s farm operations.

The MOU reflects the NFU's efforts to advocate for policies that improve the livelihoods of farming families and enhance community well-being.

This new MOU represents a strategic partnership aimed at making meaningful improvements within the FSA offices, ensuring they are better equipped to meet the evolving needs of the U.S. agricultural sector.
