New Program Helps New Yorkers Buy Fresh Food at Markets

New Program Helps New Yorkers Buy Fresh Food at Markets

By Blake Jackson

Governor Kathy Hochul has announced an expansion of benefits aimed at supporting food-insecure residents across New York State. Through the State’s FreshConnect Emergency Response Program, eligible New Yorkers can now receive weekly FreshConnect Checks valued at $20 to use at participating farmers’ markets for fresh and nutritious foods. This initiative will operate while supplies last or through December 31, 2025.

The program is funded through a $2 million allocation, part of a broader $106 million emergency response package advanced by the Governor to address food needs resulting from the recent federal government shutdown and reductions in benefits.

“While Washington Republicans continue to slash benefits for those who need them most, my administration has been focused on just the opposite,” Governor Hochul said.

“This emergency expansion of our FreshConnect program is one component of New York’s multi-faceted response to the federal government’s slashing of benefits, as we continue to do everything in our power to ensure that New Yorkers do not go hungry this holiday season. I encourage eligible New Yorkers to find a participating market near them and take part in this program.”

“For over a decade, our FreshConnect Program has helped SNAP recipients increase their buying power at farmers’ markets, helping them to buy fresh, local foods while supporting New York farmers at the same time,” said New York State Agriculture Commissioner Richard A. Ball.

“As we face a time of critical, emergency need, I’m proud that this program can expand to help fill some gaps and get more food to those that need it most. I thank Governor Hochul for her unwavering leadership in the face of such a challenge, as we all work to make sure our families have enough food to put on the table both during the holiday season and year-round.”

Unlike the standard FreshConnect structure, which offers a dollar-for-dollar match for SNAP purchases, the emergency program does not require participants to use SNAP funds to qualify. The checks may be used for a wide range of SNAP-eligible items including produce, dairy, meats, eggs, baked goods, pasta, sauces, and more.

A full list of participating farmers’ markets is available through the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets website. Eligible residents can inquire at booth management or information desks to receive their benefits.
