New York expands WIC farmers market coupons

New York expands WIC farmers market coupons

By Blake Jackson

Great news for New York families enrolled in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC)! Governor Hochul announced a significant increase in benefits for purchasing fresh, local produce at farmers' markets. This initiative is a win-win for families and farmers across the state.

Eligible WIC participants can now receive up to $50 in Farmers' Market Nutrition Program (FMNP) coupons, doubling the traditional amount.

This expansion is a temporary measure for the current season, implemented through a waiver approved by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

"This expanded benefit is an important part of our daily work to put more money back in the pockets of working families while ensuring all New Yorkers have access to healthy, fresh foods," Governor Hochul said. "By doubling the WIC FMNP benefit this year, we are offering extra help to tens of thousands of families to stretch their dollars further at farmers' markets."

The program is administered by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets (AGM) in collaboration with the Department of Health (DOH).

WIC participants, including pregnant women, postpartum mothers, breastfeeding mothers, and children under five, can use their FMNP coupons at authorized farmers' markets and farm stands to purchase fresh fruits, vegetables, and herbs.

"Since the pandemic, the Department has doubled down on its efforts to strengthen the local food system, increase food access, and connect more consumers to farmers," said State Agriculture Commissioner Richard A. Ball. "This new program meets all these goals, helping families afford healthy produce while supporting our local agricultural economy."

The increased benefits are expected to have a positive impact on public health and the state's food system. Dr. James McDonald, New York State Health Commissioner, emphasized the program's role in promoting healthy eating habits. "Governor Hochul's commitment to ensuring all New Yorkers have access to nutritious food is crucial for overcoming disparities in health outcomes," he stated.

The Farmers Market Federation of New York also applauded the initiative. "This significant increase empowers families and supports New York's dedicated farmers," said Executive Director Jack Riffle. "By doubling the benefit, we are investing directly in both consumers and farmers."

This announcement coincides with National Farmers' Market Week, highlighting the importance of these community hubs for fresh, local produce.

It complements other state programs like Summer EBT and FreshConnect Fresh2You, all aimed at increasing food access for low-income families and bolstering New York agriculture.
