The New York Department of State has announced nearly $20 million in funding to support community planning and development through the 2026 Regional Economic Development Council Initiative. The funding will help improve local areas by supporting projects that focus on sustainability, accessibility, and economic growth.
The funding supports three major programs: the Local Waterfront Revitalization Program, the Brownfield Opportunity Area Program, and the Smart Growth Community Planning Grant Program. These initiatives aim to redevelop unused or damaged land, improve waterfront areas, and promote better urban planning.
“As the State’s official land use planning entity, the Department of State provides an array of programs that help communities become more vibrant, equitable, resilient and accessible for all New Yorkers, regardless of age, ability, background or income,” said New York State Secretary of State Walter T. Mosley. “These programs, alongside our Downtown Revitalization Initiative and NY Forward programs, represent New York State’s community and economic development strategy, empowering communities to invest and build places where their residents want to live, work and thrive.”
The Local Waterfront Revitalization Program will receive the largest share, nearly $13.975 million. It helps communities create plans to improve waterfront spaces, increase public access, and protect water resources.
The Brownfield Opportunity Area Program will receive $2 million to transform polluted or unused land into useful community spaces. It supports planning, environmental studies, and redevelopment projects.
The Smart Growth Community Planning Program will get $4.8 million to help communities design better living spaces. It promotes clean energy, safe public areas, and diverse housing options.
Applications must be submitted by July 31 through the Consolidated Funding Application portal.
These programs are funded through the Environmental Protection Fund, which supports long-term sustainability and development. Overall, the initiative will help communities grow responsibly while protecting natural resources and improving quality of life.
