The Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation (TRF) is teaming up with the New York Thoroughbred Breeders Inc. to expand its sanctuary network, offering retired racehorses a chance to return to their New York roots. This initiative targets New York-bred horses, allowing them to spend their golden years in the state where they were raised, raced, and potentially even born.
Founded in 1983, the TRF is a well-established leader in equine aftercare. Entirely funded by private donations, they provide a permanent sanctuary for retired racehorses, ensuring their well-being throughout their lives. The TRF's Second Chances Program is another noteworthy initiative, offering incarcerated individuals a path to rehabilitation through vocational training in equine care and stable management.
The growing demand for space to house retired racehorses has prompted the TRF to expand into New York. Their initial plan involves establishing two sanctuaries, each caring for ten horses. This measured approach allows them to strategically grow the program based on available resources and the level of support they receive from the New York racing industry.
"This partnership presents a fantastic opportunity for farm owners in New York to create accredited sanctuaries for these deserving equine athletes," said Najja Thompson, Executive Director of the New York Thoroughbred Breeders. "The TRF's dedication to aftercare is widely recognized, and we wholeheartedly endorse their mission."
By collaborating with the New York Thoroughbred Breeders, the TRF is creating a heartwarming opportunity for retired racehorses. These equine athletes will have the chance to retire close to their birthplace, offering a fitting conclusion to their racing careers and a peaceful chapter in their lives.
