NY cannabis coalition pushes for change

By Blake Jackson

A coalition of diverse stakeholders representing New York's cannabis industry has launched "The Cannabis Conference." This united effort aims to collaborate with elected officials on solutions for ongoing issues in the medical and adult-use markets.

12 Priorities for a Thriving Industry:

The Conference outlined 12 key priorities to improve the market, focusing on:

  1. Tax Reform & Financial Support: This includes relief for struggling farmers, reforming the potency tax, repealing the medical cannabis excise tax, and establishing processor tax credits.
  2. Microlicensee Relief: Expanding operational freedom and easing regulations for microlicensees transitioning from cultivation.
  3. Codifying CAURD Program: Securing legal footing for the Conditional Adult Retail Dispensary program through legislation.
  4. Removing Marketing Restrictions: Loosening regulations to allow for responsible cannabis product promotion.
  5. Shutting Down Illegal Retailers: Empowering authorities to crack down on illicit operations.
  6. Representation on Cannabis Advisory Board: Adding retail and processor voices to the policymaking body.
  7. Out-of-State Medical Patient Reciprocity: Expanding access for qualified patients visiting New York.
  8. Medical Cannabis Insurance Coverage: Exploring ways to make medical cannabis more affordable.
  9. Pharmacist Certification for Patients: Streamlining access through in-dispensary consultations.
  10. Publicly Funded Social Equity Fund: Providing low-interest loans and support for equity licensees.
  11. Operational Relief for Farmers: Offering appeals processes, fee waivers, and regulatory adjustments.
  12. Demographic Data Release: Ensuring transparency and accountability through public reporting on license demographics.

Collaboration for a Brighter Future:

The Cannabis Conference represents a significant step towards collective action within the industry. By addressing concerns like financial viability, equity representation, and market fairness, the group hopes to unlock the full potential of New York's cannabis market, benefiting stakeholders, consumers, and the state's economy alike.
