NY state event honoring diversity in food and farm business

NY state event honoring diversity in food and farm business

By Blake Jackson

A two-day event, the Minority and Women-Owned Business Enterprises (MWBE) Women’s History Month Celebration, is being held at the New York State Equal Rights Heritage Center to honor female and minority entrepreneurs in the food and farm industry. This collaborative effort between Taste NY, Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) Cayuga County, and Harvest New York aims to promote networking, education, and showcase local food businesses.

Free educational workshops will be offered on Friday covering topics such as MWBE certification, value-added product development, and doing business with Taste NY. Businesses can learn how to become certified, how to develop new products, and how to join the Taste NY program to sell their products.

On Saturday, a Vendor Showcase will feature over 20 businesses from across New York. Visitors can expect to see products from local companies like Doughlicious, XL Cookie Company, and White Rabbit Coffee, alongside others. Live music will also be performed by the Bob Piorun Trio.

This event highlights the importance of supporting female and minority-owned businesses in the food system. Organizers aim to create a space where these businesses can connect, learn, and share their products with the public.

The event will be held at the New York State Equal Rights Heritage Center in Auburn, NY. Businesses interested in participating should contact the organizers for details. Businesses interested in attending a Workshop or the Vendor Showcase should contact Precious Tshabalala at pt385@cornell.edu, Vicki Giarratano at vlg4@cornell.edu; and Heather Ward at heatheraward@cornell.edu.
