Purple Cow Winery, a family-owned venture in Millville, Pennsylvania, emerged when Bruce and Brenda Hemsarth were inspired by their vacation to New York's wine country. Intrigued by winemaking, Bruce decided to try his hand at growing grapes and making wine on their dairy farm.
After a few years of experimentation and expanding their vineyard, the Hemsarths found themselves with an abundance of wine but limited local options for selling it.
In 2014, Purple Cow Winery opened its doors on Andrew Hemsarth's farm in Bloomsburg. Initially selling wines made exclusively from their own grapes, the winery quickly gained popularity and sold out within months.
To meet the growing demand, the Hemsarths began purchasing grapes from other local growers. Leveraging their dairy farm experience, the family's work ethic and practical skills proved invaluable in running the winery.
Purple Cow offers a variety of wines, with a focus on sweeter varieties that complement the higher acidity of grapes grown in the Northeast region. The winery has also expanded its offerings by incorporating a distillery called Distillery 51. Beyond alcoholic beverages, customers are drawn to the country experience and the opportunity to interact with farm animals while enjoying music and entertainment.
As the business flourishes, the Hemsarth family remains committed to providing a delightful and relaxed experience for visitors. With plans to continue expanding, they are considering potential collaborations between the winery and the dairy farm. The Hemsarths' success story showcases the seamless transition from dairy farming to winemaking and demonstrates the significance of their hard work, dedication, and commitment to quality.
