In a recent initiative by the U.S. Grains Council (USGC), major strides have been made in connecting Mexican brewers with U.S. barley producers, focusing on sustainable agricultural practices.
Mexico, renowned as one of the world’s top beer producers, seeks to maintain high-quality production while minimizing environmental impact.
Javier Chavez, USGC senior marketing specialist, emphasized the commitment of U.S. barley growers to sustainability, a critical factor for Mexican brewers aiming to enhance their production processes responsibly.
The Council's efforts included organizing meetings that facilitated direct interactions between Mexican brewers and barley growers in Montana.
The program kicked off at Montana State University, where participants met with Hannah Uhlman, the director of the Barley Malt and Brewing Lab. Discussions centered on the biological attributes of U.S. barley that make it ideal for brewing. Attendees also visited the university’s labs and greenhouses to witness firsthand the cultivation and testing of barley.
The series of farm visits and educational sessions across Montana provided insights into the U.S. barley value chain, highlighting the adherence to quality and sustainability from farm to brew. "Participants were extremely interested in developing new business contacts and deepening their understanding of sustainable barley sourcing," said Chavez.
This collaboration not only strengthens ties between the U.S. and Mexican beer industries but also sets a precedent for international agricultural cooperation.
