U.S. Hog Numbers Show Small Decline

U.S. Hog Numbers Show Small Decline

By Jamie Martin

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), the nation’s hog inventory totaled 74.5 million as of September 1, 2025. This figure is 1 percent lower than the same time in 2024 but shows a 1 percent increase compared to June 1, 2025, indicating a stable national supply.

Of the total, 68.5 million were market hogs, while 5.93 million were kept for breeding. Between June and August 2025, U.S. producers weaned 34.1 million pigs, which is 3 percent fewer than the same months in 2024. The average litter size during this period was 11.82 pigs per litter.

Producers plan for 2.86 million sows to farrow from September to November 2025 and 2.82 million from December 2025 to February 2026, signaling consistent breeding intentions for the coming months.

Iowa leads the nation with 25.1 million head, followed by Minnesota at 8.75 million and North Carolina at 7.80 million.

To compile the report, NASS surveyed 4,479 operators across the country during early September. Information was gathered through online submissions, mail, telephone, and in-person interviews to ensure a clear picture of U.S. hog production.

For full details, the USDA Quarterly Hogs and Pigs report and other updates can be found at nass.usda.gov, providing valuable insight into the nation’s hog market and production trends.
