The New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets is calling for nominations to fill positions on its Marketing Order Advisory Boards for apples, onions, and cabbage.
These boards play a crucial role in supporting the state's agricultural industry by recommending funding priorities, keeping the department informed about industry trends, and monitoring the effectiveness of funded projects.
"Our Marketing Order Advisory Boards provide critical support to our agricultural industry, helping to identify emerging market opportunities for vital crops, identify innovative research initiatives, and so much more," said State Agriculture Commissioner Richard A. Ball. I encourage growers and processors across our state to consider lending their voice to these important initiatives by serving on a board.”
New York's Marketing Order programs are driven by producers and offer vital financial resources for promotional and research activities aimed at boosting the profitability of key crops statewide. Here's an overview of the current openings:
- Apple Research and Development Order: Two grower positions are available, one each for the western and eastern regions of the state.
- Cabbage Research and Development Order: Two grower positions are open, along with one slot for a processor representative and one for a handler representative (location within the state is not a factor).
- Onion Research and Development Order: Three grower positions from eastern New York and one from western New York are currently available. Nominations for central New York growers will also be considered for future appointments.
- Apple Marketing Order: While no openings exist at present, nominations will be accepted from western and eastern New York apple growers, processors, and storage operators for future consideration.
Details on each board, along with regional representation breakdowns and information about the Marketing Order programs, can be found on the department's website.
Nominations must be submitted by Friday, December 6, 2024, to be considered for upcoming appointments.
