Klussendorf Mackenzie Award Awarded to Matt Sloan

Klussendorf Mackenzie Award Awarded to Matt Sloan

By Jamie Martin

The 34th Klussendorf-MacKenzie Award, one of the most respected honors in the dairy industry, was presented to Matt Sloan of Marshall, Wisconsin, during World Dairy Expo® 2025. The award, given in memory of Duncan MacKenzie, celebrates individuals who represent dedication, humility, and service in the dairy community.

Sloan’s lifelong connection to dairy began at the young age of 14, when he started clipping cattle for Nabholz Farms. His strong work ethic and attention to detail led him to work with some of the industry’s top mentors, including Joel Kietzman, Mark Rueth, and Pat Conroy. Over time, he gained recognition for preparing elite cattle at leading shows across more than 15 countries.

Two standout cows, RF Goldwyn Hailey and Musqie Iatola Martha, remain his favorites from years of international experience. In 2010, encouraged by his friend Dave Schmocker, Sloan founded Carpe Diem Hoof Trimming, inspired by the motto “Seize the Day.” This guiding philosophy continues to reflect his focus and dedication to every task.

By 2020, Sloan and his wife Molly had expanded their work to include boarding and developing top-tier show heifers, many of which have gone on to win major national honors and All-American nominations.

In recent years, Sloan’s expertise has also led him to judging, where he has served at major dairy shows including World Dairy Expo and the Midwest Spring National competitions.

Admired for his humility, leadership, and mentorship, Matt Sloan continues to raise the bar in dairy excellence. His quiet example, consistent professionalism, and genuine care for others make him a true reflection of the spirit behind the Klussendorf-MacKenzie Award.
