Cornell University's School of Integrative Plant Science will host an engaging vegetable variety showcase and pathology twilight meeting on August 21, 2024.

This free event, running from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., will take place at the Homer C. Thompson Vegetable Research Farm in Freeville, NY, located at 133 Fall Creek Rd. The evening will offer a rich program featuring field walks, vegetable trial tours, and a variety tasting, complemented by a free dinner.

The event will begin with registration and check-in for DEC Pesticide Credits from 5:00 p.m. to 5:10 p.m. Attendees will then have the opportunity to participate in a series of informative tours.

Chris Smart will lead a vegetable disease field walk, focusing on the symptoms and control strategies for issues such as cucurbit downy mildew, bacterial wilt, Phytophthora blight, and late blight.

Following this, Michael Mazourek will present a showcase of pepper, squash, and cucumber varieties, featuring around 300 different pepper types from across the globe, as well as novel winter and summer squash varieties and downy mildew-resistant cucumbers developed at Cornell.

Greg Vogel will offer insights into tomato varieties, including 32 pre-commercial and commercial types from nine companies, along with Cornell's breeding plots.

Walter DeJong will conclude the tours with a presentation on potato varieties, highlighting yield trials of chipping and fresh-market potatoes and regional trials from multiple states.

The event will wrap up with a vegetable variety tasting and dinner from 6:55 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Attendees will also have the chance to earn 1.75 DEC Pesticide Credits in categories 10, 1a, and 23.

The program is open to the public and promises a valuable opportunity to learn from experts and explore a wide range of vegetable varieties.
