NEW YORK STATE WEATHER

New Skills for NYS Veteran Growers

New Skills for NYS Veteran Growers

By Blake Jackson

The Growing Uncommon Fruit Cohort for New York State veterans offers a unique opportunity to explore lesser known but promising fruit crops while gaining technical skills, mentorship and peer support. The program runs from February to September 2026 and is designed for veterans who want to begin fruit production or add new crops to an existing operation.

The cohort will begin on February 17, 2026, with a virtual meet and greet from 6:30 to 8 p.m. This introductory session will help participants connect with instructors and fellow veterans while learning what to expect throughout the program.

As part of the cohort, members will receive free enrollment in the online course BF 123: Growing Uncommon Fruit, funded through the Farm Ops project. The six-week course runs from February 24 to March 31, 2026, and includes weekly readings, instructional videos, and live sessions with the teaching team. Participants are expected to attend at least five of the six live Zoom meetings to fully benefit from the instruction provided.

From March to August 2027, cohort members will have the chance to participate in additional in-person and virtual learning opportunities.

These sessions will cover fruit propagation techniques, production methods, value-added product development, and practical skills for managing uncommon fruit varieties. The events also encourage peer collaboration and networking, helping veterans build supportive relationships with others interested in fruit production.

The program is designed to meet veterans wherever they are on their growing journey. Whether someone is just beginning or looking to diversify their current operation, the cohort offers guidance, resources, and mentorship to help them move forward with confidence.

Applications close at midnight on February 10, 2026, and applicants will be notified of selection no later than February 16, 2026.
