According to the National Agricultural Statistics Service in New York, the week ending Sunday, July 28, 2024, saw favorable conditions for fieldwork with six days suitable.
Topsoil moisture levels were generally adequate, with 74% rated as such, while subsoil moisture also remained largely sufficient, with 89% rated adequate.
In crop progress, barley showed notable advancement, with 91% of the crop headed and 54% harvested for grain. Cabbage planting reached 93%, but only 15% had been harvested, reflecting a slower harvest pace compared to last year. Corn is progressing, with 35% of the crop silking and an average height of 69 inches.
Hay production is progressing well, with 86% of alfalfa fields in the second cutting stage and 20% in the third cutting.
Other hay has seen 63% of fields in the second cutting and 5% in the third. Oats are nearly complete with 96% headed and 18% harvested for grain.
Soybeans are making headway, with 39% blooming and 15% setting pods, while sweet corn planting is nearly complete at 97%, with 14% already harvested. Winter wheat harvest stands at 65%, maintaining its average pace.
