NFU Supports Federal Farm Market Review

NFU Supports Federal Farm Market Review

By Jamie Martin

The federal government has announced a joint action by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Department of Justice (DOJ) to examine competition within agricultural markets. The announcement follows growing concerns from family farmers about rising costs and the influence of large corporations in key farm input sectors.

National Farmers Union (NFU) Presid “American agriculture is at a breaking point. Rising input costs are hitting family farmers and ranchers hard, and corporate consolidation is a major cause. When just a handful of companies control the markets for seed, fertilizer and other farm supplies, they can raise prices at will. This leaves farmers squeezed between skyrocketing costs and low prices for their products. That is unsustainable for farm families, rural communities or consumers.” said Larew.

The NFU argues that such conditions are unsustainable not only for farm families but also for rural communities and consumers who depend on them. Consolidation has allowed corporations to dictate prices, forcing many small and mid-sized farmers into difficult financial positions.

The USDA and DOJ’s plan will scrutinize these competitive conditions and consider ways to ensure fairer market access for producers. The aim is to reduce barriers and protect independent farmers who are vital to the nation’s food system.

NFU said it will collaborate closely with the agencies to support reforms that strengthen fairness, reduce economic pressure, and restore balance to U.S. agriculture.
