New York's family-owned farms are cherished by residents and play a vital role in the state's economy, according to a recent Marist Poll. The poll found that over two-thirds of New Yorkers believe these farms provide significant value, with 86% in suburban areas and 85% in rural areas holding this view.
However, farmers face challenges, and the state Farm Bureau is urging the legislature to address them in the 2024 budget and through separate legislation. Key priorities include:
1. Mitigating Electrification Concerns: Farmers support climate action but worry about the rapid push for electrification before farms can adapt. They need reliable access to fast-charging infrastructure and grid upgrades to support electric machinery during busy seasons.
2. Protecting Farmland: The bureau is concerned about solar farms encroaching on prime agricultural land. They advocate for policies that prioritize farmland preservation and prevent permanent conversion to other uses.
3. Budget Funding for Agriculture: The proposed budget includes funding for crucial areas like environmental programs, mental health support for farmers, dairy infrastructure modernization, animal care, and local food initiatives. The bureau welcomes these investments and encourages their continued support.
4. Direct-to-Consumer Shipping: Farmers seek parity with wineries and liquor stores by allowing direct-to-consumer shipping of their beverages (beer, cider, spirits) to customers. This would expand their market reach and boost small businesses.
5. Streamlining Truck Inspections: Farmers want to reduce the burden of multiple Department of Transportation inspections for long-distance deliveries. Streamlining the process would save time and resources for both farmers and inspectors.
The Farm Bureau believes these measures will strengthen New York's agricultural sector, benefit the environment, and support the state's economy. They are working with the legislature and Gov. Hochul to secure these priorities and ensure a brighter future for New York's family-owned farms.
