New York health officials are urging residents to check their pantries for certain ground cinnamon products recently linked to high lead levels. This warning follows a similar recall of cinnamon-containing applesauce products in October 2023.
The New York State Department of Health and Department of Agriculture and Markets advise discarding any ground cinnamon from the following brands: La Fiesta, Marcum, MK, Swad, Supreme Tradition, and El Chilar. Consumers can find details on specific product lot codes affected through the FDA's alert.
These potentially contaminated cinnamon products were sold at various retailers, including Save a Lot, Dollar Tree, and Family Dollar. Some were distributed within New York State.
Officials urge anyone who purchased the listed cinnamon to throw it away immediately. If you or your child may have consumed the product, contact your healthcare provider, especially if you notice potential lead poisoning symptoms.
"Protecting the health and safety of New Yorkers is our top priority," said State Agriculture Commissioner Richard Ball. "We encourage families to check their shelves and dispose of any affected products."
State Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald emphasized the dangers of lead exposure, particularly for children. "Lead is harmful to a child's development, so it's crucial to discard these products and seek medical advice if you suspect your child may have been exposed," he said.
New York health departments are working to identify potential lead poisoning cases connected to the contaminated cinnamon products. The article also details symptoms of lead toxicity, urging consultation with a healthcare provider if exposure is suspected.
