Pig Health Education - Early Detection and Care Tips

Pig Health Education - Early Detection and Care Tips

By Blake Jackson

Swine producers are invited to take part in an educational training session focused on identifying early signs of illness and injury in pigs. The program will be led by livestock specialist Ashley McFarland alongside swine producer Adam McFarland of Top Notch Livestock & Meats, who will share practical, on-farm knowledge to help improve herd health and productivity.

Scheduled for March 5 from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. EST, the session will guide participants through effective daily observation techniques. Producers will learn how to monitor pig behavior, physical condition, and other routine indicators that can signal health concerns before they become serious problems.

The presenters will discuss common changes that may occur in a swine operation and how recognizing these signs early can limit disease spread and reduce production losses.

In addition, the training will highlight the value of accurate recordkeeping and prompt response when issues are detected. Emphasis will be placed on taking timely action to protect animal welfare and maintain consistent performance across the herd.

Producers interested in virtual Pig Production Cohort activities are encouraged to complete the questionnaire to join the event email list. Registration for in-person events will be available through a separate form.
