Learn How to Reduce Tick Exposure in Horses This Winter

By Blake Jackson

Ticks pose a serious challenge for horse owners and facility managers because they can transmit disease, irritate animals, and contribute to blood loss. To address these concerns, an upcoming educational webinar will focus on understanding and managing ticks that commonly affect horses.

The session will explore which tick species are most often encountered, when they are most active throughout the year, and the types of environments where they thrive.

Participants will gain practical, research-based guidance on reducing tick exposure using integrated pest management strategies. Topics will include habitat modification, protective measures for horses, and additional control methods designed to lower risk for both animals and people. Emphasis will be placed on approaches that support long-term effectiveness while limiting unnecessary chemical use.

The webinar will be led by Dr. Erika Machtinger, Associate Professor of Entomology at Penn State University. Dr. Machtinger specializes in veterinary entomology and IPM for livestock and equine systems.

Dr. Machtinger work focuses on sustainable solutions for managing ticks, flies, and other pests that impact animal health and welfare. She is known for translating scientific research into practical tools that horse owners can apply in real-world settings.

The webinar will take place on February 19 from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Eastern Time. For additional information, participants may contact communicate_ipm@cornell.edu.
