Recession hits U.S. Ag sector, experts report

By Jamie Martin

The U.S. agricultural economy is facing a downturn, with more than half of surveyed ag economists indicating the sector is already in a recession. This sentiment is underscored by the latest data showing a sharp decline in crop prices and a pessimistic outlook for farm incomes.

The Ag Economists’ Monthly Monitor reveals that concerns are growing, with nearly 60% of economists agreeing that agriculture is on the brink of a recession. This shift in perspective marks a significant change from just two years ago, highlighting the rapid deterioration in economic conditions.

Factors contributing to the recession include a dramatic drop in corn and soybean prices due to anticipated record harvests, and an overall decrease in cash receipts for crop producers.

While livestock prices, such as cattle, have provided some buffer, they have not offset the broader financial pressures impacting the sector.

Forecasts from the USDA's Economic Research Service suggest that net farm income will continue to fall, with projections showing a decrease of up to 25.5% in 2024 from the previous year. These challenging conditions are prompting concerns about the future of U.S. agriculture and the potential need for increased governmental support to stabilize the sector.
