Funding for organic farming transition in Oregon

Funding for organic farming transition in Oregon

By Jamie Martin

The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) in Oregon has announced funding opportunities through the Organic Transition Initiative (OTI).

Farmers, ranchers, and other producers transitioning to organic certification can apply for this program, with the current funding round open until January 17, 2025.

The OTI is designed to assist producers during the challenging transition to organic farming. This period requires adherence to strict standards, including avoiding prohibited inputs like synthetic pesticides for at least 36 months. Farmers face technical and market challenges during this time, making support vital for success.

Eligible applicants include farmers, ranchers, forest landowners, and others beginning or in the process of transitioning to organic certification.

The program also offers mentoring, crop insurance support, and market development assistance to ease the transition and promote long-term sustainability.

“USDA’s Organic Transition Initiative provides critical support for producers aiming to achieve organic certification,” stated a USDA spokesperson. This funding highlights the agency’s commitment to helping farmers build resilient, climate-smart agricultural systems.

Interested applicants are encouraged to learn more at farmers.gov/organic or contact their local USDA Service Center for guidance.
