Corn & Soybean Day will be held in two locations: January 14 at the White Eagle Conference Center and January 15 at the Saratoga County 4-H Training Center. Attendees can earn DEC credits by attending one of the events.
Corn & Soybean Day – Hamilton
This event offers 2.75 DEC Pesticide Recertification Credits (Cat. 1A, 10, 21, or 23) and 3.0 CCA CEUs, including 2.5 for Pest Management and 0.5 for Soil and Water.
The agenda begins at 9:00 am with registration, a coffee hour, and a trade show. Attendees must arrive by 9:45 am and bring their Applicator ID to receive credit.
The program kicks off at 10:00 am with Dr. Gary Bergstrom, Professor Emeritus of Plant Pathology at Cornell University, discussing "The First Report of Corn Stunt in NY and Updates on Corn Tar Spot."
Following that, Dr. Vipan Kumar, a Professor of Weed Science at Cornell University, will present on "Herbicide Resistant Weed Management in Soybean and Weed Management in Corn" from 10:30 am to 11:30 am.
At 11:30 am, Jim Stickles, a Big Game Biologist with the NYSDEC, will cover "The Most Bang for Your Bucks: Nuisance/Vertebrate Pest Management." The lunch break, combined with the trade show, runs from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm.
After lunch, Lilly Elliott and Anna DiPaola, PhD candidates in the Department of Entomology at Cornell University, will present a research update on "Seedcorn Maggot and Our Future Without Neonics" from 1:00 pm to 1:45 pm.
Then, Dr. Olivia Godber of the Nutrient Management Spear Program at Cornell will discuss "Nitrogen and Phosphorus Balances in Our Local Soils" from 1:45 pm to 2:15 pm. The event concludes at 2:15 pm with the distribution of DEC certificates.
Corn & Soybean Day – Ballston Spa
The schedule for the Ballston Spa event mirrors that of Hamilton, with similar sessions, including Dr. Bergstrom’s update on corn diseases, Dr. Kumar’s herbicide and weed management presentation, and Jim Stickles' session on pest management.
Following lunch, the research update on seed corn maggots and the discussion of nitrogen and phosphorus balances in local soils will be presented by the same experts. The event concludes at 2:15 pm with the distribution of DEC certificates.
