Delaware Grain Farmers Shine in Environmental Awards

By Jamie Martin

The Delaware Department of Agriculture’s Nutrient Management Program recently celebrated the achievements of local grain farmers at the 2024 Delaware Environmental Stewardship Awards. For the first time, the awards expanded to include grain farmers, acknowledging their crucial role in environmental conservation.

Brooke Walls, the Nutrient Management Program Administrator, presented the awards, emphasizing the deep commitment of Delaware farmers to sustainable practices. “Delaware farmers care deeply about positively impacting the environment, and we see that through their best management practices, innovative solutions, and advanced conservation techniques,” Walls stated.

Among the semi-finalists were Thomas Family Farms, Bishop Farms, Dave Marvel Farms, and Twin Cedar Ag, all of whom have demonstrated exceptional dedication to preserving soil and water quality through innovative farming techniques.

Bishop Farms emerged as the winner, celebrated for their diversified grain operation and strong advocacy for 4R practices—right rate, right place, right time, and right source—which significantly enhance sustainability and marketability of their grain.

The awards ceremony, held during the Delaware Nutrient Management Commission Meeting, highlighted various categories including poultry, vegetable crops, and livestock, but the focus on grain producers marked a significant acknowledgment of their environmental efforts.

Each semi-finalist received a lane sign, a plaque, and a monetary gift, underscoring the value of their contributions to agricultural sustainability.

This recognition not only celebrates the individual achievements of these farms but also sets a benchmark for environmental stewardship within the agricultural community, inspiring other farmers to adopt similar sustainable practices.
