Farm2LocalBiz sparks local farm and business connections

Farm2LocalBiz sparks local farm and business connections

By Jamie Martin

Farm2LocalBiz held its first networking event on November 12 at Colorado State University’s Durrell Center, drawing over 100 participants from Colorado’s agricultural and food sectors.

This gathering brought together farmers, ranchers, chefs, and distributors, creating a space where local producers could introduce their products directly to commercial buyers.

The event highlighted the wide array of local agricultural products available in Northern Colorado. From fresh greens, mushrooms, and fruits to meats like beef and bison, as well as honey and grains, producers offered samples to food businesses exploring options for local sourcing.

Chef Scott Clagett of CSU Catering contributed to the event by crafting refreshments made from the participants' ingredients. Locally produced beverages, including brews from Stodgy Brewing and wines from Colorado wineries, added to the experience.

Jessica Callen, an Agriculture and Natural Resource Specialist for Larimer County CSU Extension, emphasized the importance of events like Farm2LocalBiz in fostering these connections.

“Agricultural producers in northern Colorado report it can be a challenge to connect with local commercial markets,” she stated. “Our hope is that Farm2LocalBiz changes that.”

Producers like Dennis Lacerte, owner of Belafonte Farm in Fort Collins, found the event beneficial. “The event was incredibly helpful as a producer.

When producers can meet buyers such as restaurants, institutions, wholesalers, and food hubs, connections are made and more local business can occur,” he said.

Incentives also played a role; each commercial market attending received a $100 discount on their first purchase from a producer, promoting future partnerships.

The event, hosted by Larimer County CSU Extension and supported by multiple organizations, underscored Colorado’s commitment to strengthening local food systems and encouraging more locally-sourced products in commercial spaces.
